Palestine- Location & History

Palestine is a land that offers a lot for its people as well as the whole world for what it has from natural resources and unique species. This uniqueness is due to several facts; its location between the three main continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa; its climate that provide it with a rich environment, and for its rich and giving soil. These facts makes a lot of species, organisms, and nature to inhabit this land, and makes it the desire of every biologists, researchers, archeologist and many others to look forward to study its resources.

What is the Palestine Wildlife Society? (PWLS)

  • Definition: Palestine Wildlife Society is an active professional , and NON Profit Organization  working in research and awareness in Conservation of Nature in Palestine.

  • History: Palestine Wildlife Society was established since 1999 and the first of its kind in the area but was created in the year of 1998. Since then the society has a clear and strategic objectives regarding Environmental Educational Concepts, Conservation of the Nature and Biodiversity, which made it through the years a society that proved dedication and effectiveness in raising environmental awareness throughout different section in Palestinians territories and the region.

  • Beliefs & Philosophy: ”Think Globally, Act Locally”, that is the conservation philosophy that the PWLS stress on nowadays.

PWLS believes that Conservation Education is the main pillar in the conservation movement of any country. Therefore it has worked Intensively in the field of awareness and education with different sections. As a result of one of its success was the inclusion of environment in the nation education curriculum of the Ministry of Education in Palestine and was part of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Palestine with Ministry of Environmental Affairs.

Headquarters and Funds:

The headquarters of PWLS is based in Beit-Sahour (Bethlehem District), in cooperation with three main organizations working in different districts and Locations in Palestine (National Organizations):

  1. Palestinian organization for Protection of Environment/ Jenin.

  2. Green Peace Association/ Dier Al-Baleh- Gaza.

  3. Committee for the Promotion of Tourism in the Governorate of Jericho .

And other Ministries such as: Environmental Quality Authority , Ministry of Tourism, Agriculture and Ministry of Education in different fields. In addition to local Environmental networks in villages and towns.

  PWLS has the following International Partnerships:

  • Birdlife International- U.K Designate Partner.

  • Partner with Euronature/ European Natural Cultural Heritage Fund- Germany.

  • OISCA –Japan- Palestine Chapter.

  • Country Contact Ornithology Society for the Middle East (OSME)U.K in Palestine.

  • Country Partner: United Nation Convention to combat Desertification (UNCCD)-Bonn –Germany.  

  • With accredited to Global Environmental Faculty (GEF)- Washington DC-USA

 

Mission & Objectives

The Mission “Conservation and enhancement Of Palestine Biodiversity & Wildlife.”

 

In order to put our mission into practice, the following objectives are being established:

  • Conservation and management of Species and Habitats.

  • Education and promotion of Wildlife and Nature.

  • Active participation and involvement of local communities in Conservation Movement and sustainable development of resources.

 

Important Programs of the Wildlife Society: “Nature Conservation Program”:

  • Research & Monitoring of Birds in Palestine, with emphasis:

  • Endangered & threatened Birds.

  • Migratory Birds.

  • Seabird and Wetlands Research Conservation and Program across the Coastal Line/ Mediterranean Sea.

  • Establishment of Monitoring Station of the Wildlife (Flora &Fauna) through three Stations in/ Beit Jala (Wadi Makhror) , Jericho (Nature Garden) & Gaza (Wadi Gaza) by the end of year 2002.

  • Capacity building: Training of local & regional Ecologists on Nature Conversation & Management.

  • Education and Promotion Program:

  • Education and promotion of Wildlife and habitats through activities with School Children trips to Nature Reserves and similar activities.

  • Production of Printing Materials including Posters, Magazines and Video films…etc.

  • Inclusion of Wildlife Conservation in National Curriculum for Schools.

  • Introducing Eco-Tourism concept in the Palestinian Society.

  • Desertification: through planting Palestine’s Nature with the native plants.
